Factors To Consider Before Fitting
Most houses in the United Kingdom have wooden floors. Solid wood floors are not only visually appealing but also a sign of luxury to any place. Engineered floors, hardwood floors, and parquet floors can last for a long time if maintained properly.
Floor installation is an intricate process and needs planning. To ensure a perfect floor fitting, you must take expert advice and help. Professional fitters have the necessary skill, experience, and tools. You may feel that hiring them would come with a huge price tag, but if you make mistakes while trying floor fitting by yourself, it can cost you way more money.
You must note a few factors before continuing the floor installation process.

Subfloor Preparation
After the floorboards are acclimatised, the next step is subfloor preparation. It is another important part of the floor installation process. To prepare a smooth and dry surface for the new floors, subfloors need to be adjusted accordingly depending on the type of subfloor being used.
Subfloors are usually of two types, wooden and concrete. If you are using wooden subfloors to level the floor, the typical way would require adjusting any loose floorboard and fitting plywood on the surface to ensure it is even. Concrete subfloors, on the other hand, can be smoothened by applying Self Levelling Compound. You can also choose to apply Liquid Damp Proofing Membrane on the concrete subfloor to ensure the new floor is protected from damps.
Dust Control
Dust is an unavoidable problem wherever you go. Hence, you need to prepare the location before starting the installation process. The floor should be cleaned nicely so that the floorboards can be glued in perfectly. It’s best to keep the adjoining rooms closed to avoid cross-contamination.
Wood Floor Fitting Techniques
There are several techniques that are used to fit floors. Ths floating method is one of them.
Wood Floor Fitting Techniques
Floating is a floor installation process that involves fitting the underlays between the wooden floor and the subfloor. This process helps to provide better protection from sound and humidity. There are 2 types of Floating techniques, Click and Tongue & Groove.
Click: In this process, no adhesive or nails are used to attach individual planks with the subfloor. Instead, the boards are connected to each other with a strong locking profile ensuring no gaps and restricting their movement.
Tongue & Groove: This technique can be compared to a jigsaw puzzle where the boards are connected by grooves and tongues. This method is suitable for fitting floorboards with 18 mm or more depth.
Glue-Down Method
The short answer is – yes, in some cases. However, you need a more elaborate answer. As we explained in the steps above, they may appear simple, and you may feel that by doing it yourself, perhaps with a few hired extra hands, you can save on the seemingly large bill you are being presented with. But before plunging into a DIY venture, think it over carefully.
Trimming Doors Or Door Frames
The height of the floor changes once new floors are fitted. The doors or door frames in that area need trimming accordingly. We use special tools to trim and adjust the drop of the door frame so that it levels perfectly with the new flooring.
Nail-Down Method Of Floor Fitting
Nail-Down is one of the most popular methods for installing hardwood floors. It is especially beneficial when the wooden subfloor is used for fitting. If you use nails to fit the floorboards, we recommend using hardwood with 18 mm or more thickness.
As the name suggests, nails are punched in to secure the floorboards. However, the nails remain invisible to the eyes due to the process in which the boards are attached. The nails are positioned under the boards in an angular way, punched in using nail guns to fasten the boards. Special tongue screws are also used by the fitters from time to time.
This process can be used for repairing a small area where you can remove the damaged board and replace it effortlessly.
